THE MIRICLE OF PHANDALIN…
Gif’s past is somewhat a mystery and the goblin has difficulty recounting much detail. What little Oskar has been able to piece together amounts to the following entries noted in The Chronical of Gif – Beloved by Berronar Truesilver:
The runt of his brood, Gif remembers living in the mountains as a young goblin in a region having sparse and limited hunting. His tribe was independent at that time and warred with other local goblins for control and territory. A larger more power goblin clan that moved into the region, decimating the weaker tribes and enslaved the survivors.
During the subsequent years Gif and his remaining tribemates were continuously on the move, traveling far from their homeland, warring or changing hands from one goblin chieftain to another. Larger humanoids and predators were always a threat and the goblins were often forced to serve bugbear warlords as fodder until they could make their escape. During this time, Gif tells that besides warring with other goblinoid factions, they also raided upon human, dwarf and halfing homesteads and small settlements. Oskar notes that this of course all occurred before the Light of Berronar Truesilver came into Gif’s life.
After sometime Gif and a handful of his tribemates were eventually enslaved by Klarg, a powerful goblin leader, who set his base at the Cragmaw Cave. Gif doesn’t know the details of Klarg’s operation since he served only as a sentry guard or hunter for Klarg and his inner circle of warriors.
While guarding the cave entrance one afternoon, Gif was ambushed and captured by the Heroes of Phandalin. There and then he first heard about the Revered Mother Berronar Truesilver by Oskar who told him about the goddess in Ghukliak (tongue of his goblin language). First out of fear and self-preservation, Gif pretended to accept the goddess but was curious about the dwarf and his powers. Later when the heroes were captured by Klarg’s warriors, Gif helped them to escape the Cragmaw Cave. Gif claims that his change of allegiance was due to the respect that Oskar bestowed on him as well as the silvery light that Berronar gave her cleric to strike down his foes.
Shortly thereafter, Gif testifies that he fully embraced Berronar as his deity and joined the party. Regrettably his tribemates didn’t accept the goddess as their savoir and perished at the cave. Gif’s true love for the goddess soon become evident while clearing the Tresendar Manor where the Miracle of Phandalin took place… [ the account continues ]
Additional notations by Oskar:
Gif believes he is the last surviving member of his tribe and sees himself as the one that will have their names last in legend as Gif’s Tribe!
Gif views violence as the best answer for any challenge. Oskar notes that he is working with the goblin to seek better options based on the situation.
Gif has a demoralizing fear of Owlbears and is traumatized by his mistreatment at the hands of the bugbears. In certain combat situations his moral will break causing him to flee. Oskar accounts this not as cowardice but an aliment caused by his past circumstances and maltreatment. Oskar continues to encourage Gif whenever he overcomes his fears and compliments him when defeating adversaries.
Gif has a fondness for an odd goblin wind instrument named Kazoo. He was never allowed to truly play the instrument during his years of enslavement and is now delighted that he can freely play the instrument. He also possesses a touch of bardic magic and has become a bard of limited ability.
